Walking the Highline
"Since 2000 photographer Joel Sternfeld has documented the abandoned elevated railway line running down the west side of Manhattan. The work within this book was pivotal to friends of the high line's campaign for the preservation and re-use of the space. The line was originally built to serve the dock yards along the Hudson river but since 1980 has remained abandoned only to be reclaimed by nature. Sternfeld's photographs reveal fields of grass and wheat weaving through a city known for its monumental man made spectacles, as the seasons progress so does the line's relationship with the city. This book acts as a memorial and celebration to the high line, a historic industrial location that has been part of the city for eighty years and has most recently become one of New York's most popular spectacles."

100 Abandoned Houses
Artist's statement:
"100 seemed like a lot, although the number of abandoned houses in Detroit is more like 12,000. Encompassing an area of over 138 square miles, Detroit has enough room to hold the land mass of San Francisco, Boston, and Manhattan Island, yet the population has fallen from close to 2 million citizens, to most likely less than 800,000. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to go away any time soon."
